Historical department

The Historical department inherits and nurtures the cultural and historical heritage of the City of Sombor and the municipalities of Apatin, Kula and Odžaci since the departure of the Ottomans (1687) until the Modern Age. The items witness the multiethnic structure of the population, turbulent historical periods, rich social, cultural and sports tradition of the citizens of Sombor and inhabitants of the West Bačka.

The collection of historical items began when the Historical society of Bač–Bodrog county was founded, but its organized development did not happen until 1971, when the Historical department was formed. The collection has been developing via gifts and legacies, with a small number of purchased items.

Historical collection

At the moment, the Historical collection features around 9.600 items belonging to the political, social, economic, sports and cultural history from the 16th to the 20th century. At the end of the 20th century, the items were classified into 12 collections in accordance with the types of materials:

The Battle of Batina collection was turned into an independent collection in the restored The Battle of Batina Memorial Museum in 2017.

The Danube Germans collection was formed within the Historical department in 2019, and in 2020 it was turned into an independent collection within the Danube Germans Museum, the annex of the Sombor City Museum.
